Technical description for port 993:

The port 993 is used to securely retrieve email messages. This port is often used by webmail, which are Web-based email programs accessed via Web browsers. IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is used to retrieve emails. Version 4 of IMAP uses the port 993 as its default port for a secure connection while the port 143 remains the default port for any connection.
The security on the port 993 is provided by the TLS (Transport Layer Security)/SSL (Secure Socket Layer) protocols applied to the retrieved information. TLS and SSL are cryptographic protocols used when making connections and transferring data over the TCP (Transmission Control Protocol)/IP (Internet Protocol) networks. It specifies the encryption applied to information so that they can be sent securely on the network.
The port 993 can be used to retrieve or transfer emails from devices and not just the Internet. Emails from handheld devices and phones can be sent to the desktop.
