Technical description for port 636:

The 636 port is used for connecting to directory services being run on a TCP/IP connection. The Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) is the standard protocol used for this access. This structure is used in a number of network and email software applications such as Joomla, PHPBB and Microsoft_s Systems Management Server 2003.
The default port used for LDAP connections is 389. The 636 port is used to make the connection over a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) instead of a Transport Layer Security (TLS). This process allows a TLS connection to be created automatically without the need for a Start TLS command. The connection is made before transferring any LDAP information.
The LDAPS connection was first established over the 636 port for version 2 of the LDAP protocol. It is used to retrieve, modify and add entries in the directory.
An SSL certification may be needed so that the information can be transferred via the port 636.
