Technical description for port 631:

The 631 port is used by the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP). This standard is used for connecting printers to computers. It can be used within a directly connected printer, a printer being shared via a Local Access Network (LAN) or over the Internet. The port can be used to send print and manage print jobs.
The port can be used to designate the resolution and size of the files to be printed. The information is based on the Hypertext Transfer Protocol 1.1 (HTTP/1.1) specification. The IPP standard was implemented in the Common UNIX Printing System (CUPS) and the Novell iPrint software for printing systems. The Port 361 can be used to receive and send printing jobs.
The IPP protocol uses this port both on computers that send the printing commands and those that receive it. The port 631 may be automatically chosen by IPP-based software.
Users may also need to choose the 631 port manually.
