Technical description for port 5353:

Multicast DNS protocol is officially registered to make use of the functionalities available in the computer port 5353. This protocol implements recognizable DNS programming interfaces including operating semantics and packet formats. The implementation of this port is advantageous in small networks wherein conventional DNS servers are not installed. This protocol is a combination of zeroconf and dnsext services.
The Zeroconf (Zero Configuration Networking) and DNSExt (DNS Extensions) are both supported by the system port 5353. These protocols use current DNS protocol standards to implement minimal changes that are meant to simplify the creation of new APIs by application programmers. Deployment of these protocols eliminates the need to create application codes for configuring connections even in large networks.
Via the network port 5353, current applications can be deployed correctly with mDNS. Current tools can display and decode DNS packets, removing the need to understand new formats of packets.
Zeroconf is meant to make implementation of current computer networking at a personal level easier and better.
