Technical description for port 389:
Port 389 is a server port for the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. LDAP is an adaptation of x.500 dir std. LDAP clients can access the central directory through the port. Users can then retrieve, add, and modify information on the directory. Examples of these directories are the following: PKI systems databases, e-mail address books, and internet directory services tracking users of collaborative applications such as instant messaging, audio, video, and other applications. LDAP can track online users, their Internet Protocol addresses, and other data about them. LDAP is also used by Windows 2000 Active Directory.
